Contrary to theories that the Queen would hand the throne straight to Prince William, bypassing her scandal-plagued son Prince Charles, there are claims today that the British royal will ‘give up her powers’ to her eldest child in just two years, when she turns 95, by invoking the 1937 Regency Act.

‘There is talk that when she reaches 95 in a couple of years she may slow down and possibly the Regency Act will be brought in,’ royal expert Phil Dampier told Yahoo’s The Royal Box.

The Act allows a reigning monarch to hand over power if they feel they are unable to fully perform their duties.

‘She will still be Queen but Prince Charles will, in fact, take over most of the duties,’ Dampier explains.

‘He is starting to do that already, being at the state opening in Parliament and the Commonwealth conference.

‘He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures.’

Author Robert Jobson says there is already a ‘period of transition’ underway, with the Queen giving Charles more responsibility.

‘The Queen at her next birthday will be 93. She has not completed a long-haul state visit since 2011.

‘Although the Prince of Wales has talked about there only being one sovereign at a time and that is true, what you do have is a bit of a dual monarchy at the moment and a transition that is ongoing.’

It’s been a time of turmoil and chance for the House of Windsor, with Prince Harry recently marrying Meghan Markle and welcoming a son, Archie, amid reports of a feud with his brother Prince William and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton

There is ongoing controversy over claims that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will be Queen once Her Majesty steps down or passes away – with lingering resentment over the Duchess’ role in the unhappiness of Charles’ first wife, the late Princess Diana
