The 61st Logie Awards was held at The Star in Queensland’s Gold Coast last night – and it may have been the most exciting yet.

Kicking off the Australian television awards with the red carpet, the Home and Away stars looked stunning, and Sam Frost even gave us a glimpse behind the scenes when she shared her own photos from the night.

Then it was into the awards ceremony, where Gold Logie nominee Tom Gleeson set the tone for the evening by roasting Karl Stefanovic over his Today show sacking.

“I think the reason they [the Logies] ask you to do the opening is because Channel Nine has run out of stars,” Tom began.

“They don’t have any left. They have a new rule on breakfast TV too if you are too entertaining they fire you. Am I right Karl. Is Karl here. Where is Karl?”

Tom then went in for the kill, but not before slamming Channel Nine reality TV show Married At First Sight.

“Congratulations to Married At First Sight by the way for their monster ratings. Give them a huge round of applause.

“Channel Nine were happy to cash in on your ratings by showing off your tacky weddings, and fired Karl Stefanovic for having one!”

Married at First Sight may have pulled in the ratings, but the show was snubbed when it didn’t take out any awards in the night, despite being nominated for Most Popular Reality Program – which was won by Channel Ten’s MasterChef – and a nod for Most Outstanding Reality Program – which went to Channel Ten’s Australian Survivor

Even the stars of the show weren’t treated like TV royalty, with contestants shunned after their red carpet arrival and forced to watch the ceremony in a bar at the back of the casino.

Not receiving an invite to the event didn’t stop MAFS‘ Jessika Power and Ines Basic from gatecrashing the Logies, with the TV villains showing up just as the guests left the event.

But perhaps the biggest shocker of the night was Hard Talk host Tom Gleeson scooping the Gold Logie win, ahead of fellow contenders Amanda Keller, Eve Morey, Sam Mac, Waleed Aly, Rodger Corser and Costa Georgiadis.

The ABC presenter had come under fire from Grant Denyer in the build up to the Logies 2019 for running a smear campaign against his fellow Gold Logie nominees.

Tom posted a series of tweets and “attack ads” slamming other nominees as part of his effort to win Gold.

“It’s become a joke this year,” Grant told his radio co-hosts Ed Kavalee and Ash London last week.

“Two of the loudest Gold nominees are just effectively taking the p*ss,” he vented.

And Tom’s acceptance speech did nothing to boost his favour among his TV contemporaries.

“I’m in a tricky spot because I like it and I hate it at the same time,” the comedian joked.

“It’s a shame this is the last Gold Logie,” Gleeson said, referencing Grant’s now infamous comments that slammed the comedian’s campaign, labelling it ‘a joke’.

“According to Grant Denyer I’ve ruined the Logies and it’s never going to happen again, but at least I won this all by myself.”

Amanda Keller also took the knock-back hard, with The Living Room host looking visibly annoyed as Tom stood on stage to collect his trophy.

“Just because all of you want it and I’ve got it, don’t get angry with me. It’s alright, you’ll all survive,” Tom said as Amanda glared from the audience.

“This award for me represents a joke, but I love jokes. I really enjoy them. I really think we should all lighten the f**k up. I really do,” Tom said, as he knocked back the drinks during his speech.

While Tom admitted he was definitely not the most popular person on Australian TV, he declared he was taking the win for the ABC.

“Turns out I’m just really good at manipulating the media to get people to do things for me…. So maybe I do deserve this award,” he added.

“I am going to take this as a win for the ABC.
