Speaking during an interview on The Morning Show, the culinary king said while the People’s Princess was an avid cook, her kitchen skills left little to be desired.

“The princess was the worst cook ever,” Darren told co-hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies, referring to one very specific moment in the royal kitchen.

“I used to work Monday to Friday and had weekends off. One day, she invited her friend over, and she was in the kitchen cooking pasta and a tomato sauce.

“They got chatting away, the pasta boiled over and put out the pilot light. They went to eat their food, and later the Princess came back into the kitchen and she could smell gas. It was from the pilot light,” Darren said.

He recalled how the princess even made a cheeky remark about having to call on the Palace fire brigade to help bring the near-miss situation under control.

“Monday morning, she came and said to me, ‘Darren, you won’t believe what happened to me. I nearly set the kitchen on fire. But the best part was, I had 12 hunky firemen to myself,’” he quipped.

Later in the segment, Darren, who also cooked for Princes William and Harry as babies, reflected on some of the favourite meals he prepared for the boys.

“They loved the burgers, they loved the hotdogs, they loved the fried chicken and cottage pies and things like that – but there was always that battle with nanny about having their green vegetables.

Darren spent a total of 15 years cooking meals for the royal family and was in charge of preparing meals for not only Diana and her boys, but also The Queen.

When asked what he thinks Diana’s reaction to her boy’s life choices would be, the chef said she would be very proud.

“I feel the Princess would be looking down right now and her heart would be just beaming at those two precious boys. She adored the boys,” he said.
