In a Channel 5 documentary For Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding, the newsreader claims the people’s princess was ‘out of her depth’ when she sat down for an interview the night before their nuptials.

Looking back at the footage, Angela said: ‘When I say “wishing you a lifetime of happiness together,” he looks towards her and she looks down at the floor.

‘That expression on Diana’s face at the end speaks volumes… gosh. Might have told so much more about what was to come.’

She added: ‘And obviously, with the knowledge of hindsight, you read so much more into body language, what was said, looks that were given, reactions, that’s the value of hindsight isn’t it?’

Angela says that Charles was considerably more relaxed in the interview than Diana, who Angela says could have been intimidated by the presence of Michael Shay, the Queen’s then Press Secretary.

‘When we went into the room, Michael was standing behind me, out of camera shot but behind me and in Lady Diana’s eye-line,’ she added.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Emanuel, the fashion designer who made Diana’s iconic wedding dress said that she and husband David had to “start again a couple of times”, and that Diana had gone from a 29-inch waist down to just 23.

Diana’s former employer Mary Robertson also gave her first ever TV interview in the doco and revealed that despite the rumours, the princess was very much in love with Charles.

“She was very much in love with Prince Charles or certainly with the image of Prince Charles.”

The Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer in the royal wedding of the century at St Paul’s Cathedral in London in July, 1981.
