After purchasing the Ikea Karlstad sectional couch with her husband, savvy shopper Annie Gabillet revealed the super easy way she made over the couch to look more expensive.

A quick search online revealed a company selling couch legs specifically for Ikea products. It was as simple as unscrewing the legs and swapping them over.

Realising the demand for the ability to customise furniture, Ikea announced earlier this year they plan to release what they’re calling its first “open source” sofa.

“People hack anyway; we want to encourage that,” James Futcher, Ikea’s creative lead for the new product, told the Wall Street Journal.

The new product will function like a flat pack bed, featuring wooden slats and an aluminium frame.

“It comes in different sizes, with optional armrests, a headboard and a sofa back, which can be clipped on depending on what it is being used for. Ikea said it planned to price the Delaktig around the middle of its sofa range, typically from $US399 ($530) to $US899,” the publication added.

The product is set to be released early next year.
