We all know how the effects of a big night can show up when you look in the mirror the next day. Longer-term skin issues can also reveal what’s going on with your health.
Forehead breakouts
In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) the forehead area is related to the digestive system. “Eat less oily, hard to digest foods such as deep-fried and creamy foods and meat. Oily hair and wearing dirty caps can also be a culprit,” says skincare and acne-expert Judy Cheung-Wood.
Dark under-eye circles
These can be genetic, occur with ageing or rapid weight loss. “Stress and not getting enough sleep can also make dark circles appear worse,” says dermatologist Dr Natasha Cook. Good concealer is the best way to manage them.
Broken veins on the cheeks
“Unprotected sun exposure, over-exercising, hot saunas and alcohol can all lead to capillary development,” says Natasha. Rosacea can cause the same appearance. “Treatment with vascular laser is useful in most cases,” says Dr Catherine Reid, from the Australasian College of Dermatologists.
Breakouts on the cheeks
It could also be the result of holding your phone (which is covered in bacteria) to your face and using dirty make-up brushes, so clean both regularly. In TCM the cheek area is related to the respiratory system. “Don’t smoke and get more clean, fresh air,” says Judy.
Dark patches/pigmentation
Hyperpigmentation or melasma can develop during pregnancy, or if you are taking the pill or hormone replacement therapy. Heat and sunlight worsens dark patches, so be vigilant about using daily sunscreen. “Seeing a good dermatologist who can add in prescriptive creams out can also really help,” says Natasha.
Breakouts on the jawline
These often indicate hormonal fluctuations or imbalance. “PCOS can result acne in this area. Eating more natural wholefoods and leafy vegies have been shown to help reduce breakouts,” says Judy. She also advises taking the herb vitex and zinc.
