John Cleese has shocked Conan O’Brien’s audience with some startling remarks about his ex-wives – admitting he wishes they’d all die – before slagging off his children.
Always the edgy funny man since his early days as Basil Faulty from the hit English comedy Faulty Towers, Cleese – now 77 – takes a no holds barred approach to his frank interviews.
Cleese’s previous marriages now tally four over 34 years, and he’s currently with wife number four, Jennifer Wade. Though saying he missed his late wife Barbara Threntham – whom he lost to complications with leukemia – he admitted he would be quite happy if one or two of his other exes were dead.
“I wish them dead in the nicest possible way,” he said, “Not dead in a slow agonising death over a number of years. Something quick like a tree falling on them.”
He then went on to bad-mouth children – or more specifically his own – revealing that the secret to a lasting marriage was to not have them.
“I think the secret is not to have children. Children are the cause of most of the misery in the world,” he said. “They cost you a fortune, you worry yourself sick and then they grow up like their mothers. Cats are the answer. You can feed them twice a day.”
All the comments were, of course, in jest and delivered alongside Cleese’s long-time colleague Eric Idle. The two are touring the US to promote their north American two-man comedy show ‘Together Again at Last… For the First Time’.
