A Murphy Brown favourite has died

The tragic news has been confirmed.

Legendary actor Jay Thomas has passed away at the age of 69.

The star – best known for playing Jerry Gold in 90s sitcom Murphy Brown – lost his battle with cancer, TMZ reports. He died at his California home with his wife and three sons by his side.

Thomas’ agent confirmed the tragic news in a statement, reflecting on his friend as “one of a kind, never at a loss for words and filled with so much fun and wonderfully whacky thoughts and behaviour.”

Thomas began his career in the early 80s landing a role as Remo DaVinci on Mork and Mindy. He later garnered attention for his work as hockey player Eddie LeBec on Cheers.

Along with his stints on sitcoms, Thomas was a favourite guest on Late Night with David Letterman, making regular appearances on the show.

He also scored memorable roles in movies like Mr. Holland’s Opus and The Santa Clause franchise and saw success as a radio personality, hosting The Jay Thomas Show on SiriusXM.

Many have taken to Twitter to pay their respects, with fellow celebrity Tom Arnold remembering him as a “fantastic, underrated dramatic actor.”
