Brian & Delta: A Love Story
It was a rollercoaster seven years that kept us all on the edge of our seats; a love story between one entertainment’s most famous couples. It would be music that brought them together. It’s clear that Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden were once very much in love but that would all come to an end. Whilst both have made statements concerning their relationship and it would appear it was not the happy break they initially wished to portray. At the time McFadden said the break up was amicable and declared that ‘I love Delta and always will. She is one of God’s living angels.’
But first, the beginning. They met in 2004; he separated from his wife, Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona (the mother of his two children Molly and Lilly-Sue) and Delta having split with tennis star Mark Philippoussis. Brian asked Delta to duet on a new tune called Almost Here that he was recording for his new album. She agreed and the pair clicked both musically and romantically and soon were dating.
Almost Here
Almost Here was a smash hit, topping the charts in both Ireland and Australia and the new couple were seen everywhere very clearly in love. However the British tabloids were soon casting Delta as a villain who’d come in between Brian and Kerry’s marriage. Delta was feeling the pressure saying in the press that she was most likely the most hated woman in Britain.
Despite the negativity the romance blossomed and the couple were not only constantly in the public eye, they also shared the creative process by co-writing songs and performing together. By 2007 they announce their engagement.
Mistakes
A glamorous wedding would never come to be and over the next few years the relationship seemed to fizzle out. Although they kept up a unified public front the rumour mills kept churning. In 2010 Delta featured in a video for a new song by Brian called Mistakes. The video was anything but romantic with a theme of a relationship in turmoil and, to be honest, both stars looked like they weren’t necessarily acting. On set Brian and Delta claimed the song wasn’t autobiographical and that the two were very much in love but despite their denials their relationship seemed strained.
That same year whilst Delta was recording in the US Brian quietly moved out of their Sydney home and in with his mate, video director Dan Reisinger. A spokesperson for Brian denied the couple had split saying, ‘Delta’s not around and Brian gets bored. They’ve not split up.’
However in 2011 after much conjecture, the pair informed the world they were no longer together via a short statement which read, ‘Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden regretfully announce that they are no longer engaged, and after much consideration, have mutually decided to end their relationship.’
Dancing With A Broken Heart
At first it seemed the relationship break was amicable but by 2012 Delta was opening up in the media about how trapped she felt and how hard it was for her to break free. She told 60 Minutes, ‘Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes. Do I wish I had the courage to leave earlier? Yes, I do. I think what we came to is that we were very different people – extremely different people.’
Brian was none too happy and responded that, ‘Sometimes silence is golden. People love to try and deflect attention from their own downfalls onto others.’
Delta left most of her talking for the studio and her fourth studio album Child of The Universe features several songs that appear to be about her ex including the hit Dancing With A Broken Heart and the line, ‘I wasted so many years, cried so many tears.’
Like Only A Woman Can
McFadden’s most famous song about Delta is the beautiful Like Only A Woman Can which he recorded in 2008 when they were engaged and seemed destined to be husband and wife. Upon their split in 2011 Brian declared he would never sing the song again but that year he relented singing it for his friend Stefan’s birthday, the singer fighting back tears as he performed the song. Later a source said that ‘Brian is devastated at losing Delta. He dreamed they would get married and grow old together.’
The story has a happy ending though and it wouldn’t be long before both were seen out and about with new partners on their arms; Delta with Nick, the youngest Jonas brother, eight years her junior, whilst Brian fell for Irish star Vogue Williams whom he would eventually marry in 2012.
Despite their differences and the the Delta showed her class by wishing the couple well. ‘I only wish him the best. There’s nothing more to talk about when it comes to that chapter. It’s in the past,’ said Delta.
Kyle Sandilands Bizarre Story
Of course only a shock jock like Kyle Sandilands could have the grossest story about Delta and Brian. Is it true? Who knows, it clearly grossed out Jackie O when he recounted his tale on their radio show late last year.
He told his cohost that the, then engaged couple would visit and play a game where they would spit in to each other’s mouth.
‘I remember when I’d have them around my house and they were in love and sometimes would spit in each other’s mouth,’ Sandilands explained.
‘Why?’ said Jackie O with a horrified look on her face.
‘Fun, they said fun,’ replied Kyle, ‘But I always thought, ‘Wow! That’s weird’.’
‘Delta would sit with her mouth open and Brian would spit into her mouth and Delta would spit back into his mouth.’
Jackie O, still shocked and disgusted, then put the discussion to a halt by stating ‘I think that’s gross. I think I’d throw up if someone spat in my mouth.’
What’s Brian up to these days?
Pictured here at the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor Resort on July 13 in Wales, it’s safe to say Brian is mellowing into life featuring in celebrity reality shows in the UK like The Jump and Dancing On Ice and also touring with his new act Boyzlife; a collaboration with ex Boyzone singer Keith Duffy.
Since 2016, the former Westlife star has been happily dating PE teacher from Rochdale, Danielle Parkinson and ex-wife Kerry Katona is keen to see Brian settle down and tie the knot.
‘Danielle is an absolute diamond. Molly and Lilly idolise her – I think they prefer her to Brian! She’s too good for him.’
‘Molly and Lilly weren’t as close to Delta or Vogue but they’re desperate for Brian to marry Danielle,’ she has said. ‘I might even get invited to this wedding! I’m absolutely over the moon for him – everyone deserves a shot at happiness.’
Delta’s search for love
The Voice star, pictured here with Olivia Newton-John in LA in August 2019, is still Australia’s sweetheart but hasn’t been that lucky in love lately. Her relationship with controversial rocker Matt Copley hit the rocks not long after it began. Copley’s bad boy past and history of bad breakups forcing the once bitten twice shy Delta to break it off with the Australian singer. There was also some conjecture that she may hook up with ex-paramour Nick Jonas who’s remained a good friend and close confidant. Some close to Delta even said she had hoped to reignite her romance with the global superstar. Those hopes were dashed following Jonas’s whirlwind romance and marriage to actress Priyanka Chopra.
