One of Charles’ good friends, Broderick Munro-Wilson told Paxman that before the Prince of Wales wed Princess Diana he was so disheartened over his quest to find a royal bride that he made the tongue-in-cheek “go gay” comments/

Discussing an old newspaper story about “potential brides” for the heir, Broderick Munro-Wilson tells Paxman: “I thought the only possibility was Caroline of Monaco.”

But he said Charles was not tempted by any of his suitors and once joked: “Shall I go gay?”

“You’ve got to remember when you marry, in my position, you’re going to marry someone who perhaps one day will become Queen,” Charles divulged in a 1960 interview.

Having watched his “true love” Camilla marry Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, Charles was said to be “absolutely heartbroken” and  wrote to his his uncle Lord Mountbatten saying “I suppose shall eventually get over it”.
