From affairs and betrayals, New Idea unveils the British monarchy’s most shocking moments.
Fergie’s affairs
At five months’ pregnant with her second child, Princess Eugenie, the Duchess of York embarked on an affair with charismatic Texan businessman Steve Wyatt.
On finding out Wyatt had become engaged to Cate Magennis in 1993, she revealed to a pal: “I can’t have the man I love because he’s getting married. What’s the matter with me? Why didn’t he marry me?”
And when she found out Steve was in town with his new wife, she drove to the restaurant he was dining in, so she could watch him.
The affair ended her marriage to Prince Andrew and the couple separated in 1992, after six years together as man and wife.
That year she was photographed having her toes sucked by her American financial adviser – and Wyatt’s friend – John Bryan, who was “fantastically jealous of Wyatt.”
Prince Philip’s secret letters
Letters unearthed this year, allegedly written by Prince Philip to Princess Diana in 1992, reveal how the Duke of Edinburgh disapproved of Charles’ affair with Camilla.
“Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position,” the letter began.
“We never dreamt he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla. Such a prospect never even entered our heads.”
The Queen’s affair
There have long been rumours that the Queen had an affair with her racing manager Lord Carnarvon and that he’s Prince Andrew’s real father. The two knew each other from childhood and grew close through their shared love of horses and racing.
He went onto become the Queen’s horse manager in 1969, a position he retained until his death in 2001, and was one of the few people who were allowed to contact Her Majesty directly.
Known as ‘Porchey’ to his friends, rumours that he fathered Andrew were prompted when the Duke of Edinburgh was said to be overseas when he was conceived, although these dates were later disputed.
