Following the news a gunman opened fire on two mosques in New Zealand, a palace aide confirmed William would be flying out (missing Louis birthday) to pay tribute to those who were injured and killed during the attack.
“New Zealand also has a great affection for the Duke and the royal family," the official statement from the palace aide read, "It was very much the Duke’s decision to come to New Zealand, he wanted to do something and not just something reactive. He worked with the country’s Prime Minister on the visit and the timing. It was decided that doing the trip a month after the attacks would give it a bit of a legacy.”
On Friday the Duke of Cambridge delivered a heartfelt speech at Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, reminding many people of his mother's passion for supporting people through tough times.
“A terrorist attempted to sow division and hatred in a place that stands for togetherness and selflessness," William told an audience, "He thought he could redefine what this space was. I am here to help you show the world that he failed.”
