A heartwarming video has captured the emotional reaction of a little girl to her baby sister’s birth.
Eight-year-old Brooke helped deliver baby Summer – a moment made all the more poignant as her mother Kelsey had previously lost another baby.
The death of the unborn bub had left Brooke devastated.
‘Brooke was absolutely heartbroken. She cried so hard and didn’t understand why,’ Kelsey, from Arizona, explained in a post shared by Love What Matters.
‘As her mom, I told her that God decided to keep the baby with him and that the baby was too precious for earth.
‘That seemed to help her find comfort in the loss.’
Tragically, Kelsey went on to suffer two more miscarriages before having another successful pregnancy – welcoming baby Ellie in January 2016.
She later fell pregnant again, with another precious girl.
This time, Kelsey thought it would be wonderful if Brooke was not only there to see her sister born – but if she could cut the umbilical cord.
‘I prepped Brooke by explaining the positioning, where she could place her hands, that the baby will be slippery and that there will be a lot of blood, but that it is all normal,’ Kelsey explained.
A beautiful video of the moment Brooke met her baby sister has gone viral online.
The video – which Kelsey gave New Idea permission to publish – shows the adorable little girl bursting into tears as baby Summer is placed in her mother’s arms.
‘It meant everything to me!’ Kelsey told What to Expect.
‘I couldn’t have imagined not having her there! She’s such an awesome sister and daughter … I think a lot of society takes for granted what a kid can handle.
‘We don’t give them enough credit — they’re very aware and smart.’
As for Brooke, she loved the experience too.
‘It was really cool being there,’ she said.
‘I think it made all three of us have a very close bond.
‘I learned how to help expel the placenta from the abdomen, and I also realised when I grow up I want to be a midwife.’
