Just days after news broke that Big W could be forced to shut down a third of its stores nationwide comes news that another major chain has shut several of its stores also.
New Idea Food has reported that Paul’s Warehouse – a favourite for shoppers offering discount sporting goods – has closed four stores across the nation, shocking many on social media.
Shoppers report arriving at the various locations around the country to find ‘CLOSED DOWN’ signs on the doors, with no other notice believed to be given.
Paul’s Warehouse has since confirmed the store closures – at Logan in Queensland, Thomastown in Victoria and Gosford and Thornton in NSW – on their Facebook page.
When asked whether the various stores have closed down for good, Paul’s Warehouse confirmed the news and offered their ‘apologies for any inconvenience.’
The shock closures mean there are now no Paul’s Warehouse stores in Queensland and only two in Victoria. Responding to the closures of the Gosford and Thornton stores, Paul’s Warehouse wrote: ‘These 2 stores have closed down, although our Sydney and interstate store will remain. Apologies for any inconvenience.’
Their statement, however, sparked confusion online with some wondering if their mention of just one ‘interstate store’ would mean there are more store closures to come.
At present, Paul’s Warehouse has five remaining stores around the country – but now many social media users are wondering whether those stores are at risk also.
Said one: ‘They are replying to comments on one of their fb page posts now, apparently Sydney and their “interstate” store are staying open…don’t know which one is the interstate one though.’
The news has left some Queensland shoppers reeling, and many big fans of the store disappointed.
‘Oh no, I drive nearly 3 hours just to get to that store a few times a year to get school and netball shoes, saves me an absolute fortune,’ said one. ‘What? Noooooo!!!’ said another.
The news comes just days after it was revealed that Big W had been tipped to close 60 stores due to falling profits. It’s believed that regional stores could be at risk if the Big W closures eventuate – leading many shocked.
‘I think Big W should do more to fix these stores and make them better,’ says one social media user. ‘We don’t have a lot of choice in rural areas and it will be a shame to lose Big W.’
