In the wake of Melbourne comedian Eurydice Dixon’s murder last month, The Project host Lisa Wilkinson has been a strong voice for women’s safety.
The popular presenter shockingly revealed last night that she has carried a whistle on her key ring ‘for years’, in a bid to protect herself from attackers as she admits she ‘feels unsafe often.’
Speaking to Confidential, the 58-year-old said that while the whistle had long been a fixture in her personal safety regimen, she added that, thankfully, it remained unused.
She explained, ‘I’ve never had to use it but this is all about that one moment when you might be the one that gets picked because every single one of those women whose names we know like Eurydice Dixon – all of these women were chosen at random.’
Wilkinson also recounted a recent scare she had in a supermarket carpark, which she claimed worried her enough to have her keys ‘splayed between’ her fingers.
The host, and mother-of-three, adds that it’s important for women to take measures to protect themselves.
‘They didn’t do anything wrong, but all it takes is one madman to target you and you want to know you have everything in place to defend yourself.’
Lisa recently fought back tears when speaking of the ‘advice’ Victorian Police gave at a recent press conference following Eurydice Dixon’s murder.
‘Take responsibility for your safety. Make sure that you have situational awareness, make sure that people know where you are and that, if you’ve got a mobile phone, carry it,’ Super Intendant Dave Clayton said.
On The Project, Lisa fought back tears when referecing a Margaret Attwood quote: ‘Margaret Attwood, the author who wrote The Handmaid’s Tale more than 30 years captured the imbalance we’re talking about here when she remarked ‘Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them’.’
