A Queensland RSPCA pet store has come under fire it after it was caught selling Julia Gillard dog chew toys.
The Wacol store, Brisbane, pulled the toy off their shelves after they were flooded with complaints.
RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said an intern mistakenly put he $20 toy on the shelves.
‘About six years ago we had Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard toys which we sold,’ Beatty told The Courier Mail.
The Abbot toys sold out, but the leftover Gillard toys were placed in storage.
Despite the mistake, Women’s Electoral Lobby convener Jozefa Sobski described the toy as ‘disrespectful’.
‘Surely they have other creatures they can use as toys, this is just repugnant,’ Sobski said. ‘It is disrespectful to the former prime minister, and I believe it is designed and sold to be disrespectful.’
Sobski wasn’t the only one to speak out about the toys.
Lesley Russell Wolpe wrote on Twitter: ‘Julia Gillard objectified as dog chew toy by RSPCA – I gather there are also Rudd, Abbott versions. Not on @RSPCA.’
Another Twitter user wrote: ‘Selling dog chew toys of Julia Gillard Say bye bye to future donations RSPCA!’
