There’s a man called Spencer from Tennessee who has spent the past six years genuinely believing he was in a relationship with Katy Perry.
In the latest episode of MTV’s Catfish, hosts Nev Schulman and Max Joseph meet Spencer, who claims to have fallen in love with the singer on a texting app.
‘This is going to be your best episode ever,’ he tells Nev and Max. ‘Because Katy is Katy Perry,’ Spencer admits.
Even though the real Katy Perry was married to Russell Brand during this period, and is now dating actor Orlando Bloom, it didn’t seem to bother Spencer.
‘I think she is dating someone, yes. I think it’s that Elf from The Lord of the Rings,’ he told Nev and Max.
He even went to the trouble of making an engagement ring from his grandmother’s emerald, which cost him 25% of his savings.
Nev and Max end up finding ‘Katy’, who is actually a woman named Harriet who was living in London.
She apologised for the lies, telling Spencer, ‘I’m like genuinely sorry. I can’t change what I did, but I understand that it was really wrong.’
Even after meeting Harriet, it took Spencer a lot of convincing to finally accept that he had been stringed along by this woman for six whole years.
When MTV contacted Spencer months after the Catfish discovery, it was revealed he was still emailing ‘Katy’.
