After harbouring a lonely health secret for nearly a lifetime, rock legend Bruce Springsteen has made a brave confession – revealing he has suffered from depression for more than 30 years.
Speaking out for the first time in a new interview for Vanity Fair, the star admits he is scared he will end up suffering the same fate as his father, who also battled mental illness.
‘You don’t know the illness’s parameters,’ the Born in the USA singer tells the magazine. ‘Can I get sick enough to where I become a lot more like my father than I thought I might?
‘I was crushed between 60 and 62, good for a year and out again from 63 to 64,’ the 66-year-old says of the impact the illness has had on his life in recent years. ‘Not a good record.’
With the singer set to go into more detail in his upcoming book Born to Run, his wife Patti Scialfa says the writing process was cathartic for Bruce.
‘He approached the book the way he would approach writing a song, and a lot of times, you solve something that you’re trying to figure out through the process of writing — you bring something home to yourself,’ she says.
