Pack up your ironing board, coil the cord to your iron and place them far, far away, never to be seen again. Why? We’re going to let you in on a secret that will transform your workload around the home, and it’s only $35.

Got a school uniform that needs a going over? How about a shirt? Easy. The handheld garment steamer from Kmart removes creases and wrinkles from clothing, home linen and even curtains.
We all know that ironing can be the most hated of chores around the home, but this little miracle will get it done in half the time. And we’re all cottoning on. Over in the UK, sales of handheld garment steamers have rocketed by 128 per cent over the last five years.

We gave it a whirl. The steamer is compact and lightweight, and it heats up in 30 seconds. There’s an added bonus for when you’re really running behind and haven’t had time to wash your favourite frock; the steam removes odour from garments too. Is there anything it can’t do?
One online reviewer, Elizabeth, says it has replaced her iron.
‘It works on every type of garment, even curtains. I was a bit wary of having this break down, but it has defied expectations and been steady and reliable,’ she said in an online review.

If you want to splash out an extra $14 you can get the standalone steamer for $49 which provides approximately 50 minutes of continuous steam. One online reviewer says they prefer this over ironing.
‘It’s nice and sturdy and should last. No staining or damage to clothing at all. I recommend this product,’ they say.

And in a further miracle, another reviewer says her son has taken to steaming his own school uniform every morning.
‘Never ironed once in his life, but steams his uniform every morning and steams most of mine and the kids’ clothes too,’ the reviewer said.
That would never happen with an iron. Who knew household chores could be so fun!
