Candle strategies
Scented candles are an easy way to bring a fresh scent to the home, but you need to follow a few steps to get the best out of them. First be patient, a newly lit candle might take up to an hour before it reveals its scent. If you’re expecting visitors, get your candles lit well in advance. A 200g candle will cover about 10sqm, so larger rooms may need more than one. And here’s a great tip: Store your new, unused candles in your linen cupboard for a great scent every time you open the door.
Dryer sheets in linen cupboards
Scented dryer sheets are not only useful in the dryer you can also place a few in your linen cupboards and dresser draws which leave your clothes and linen smelling fresh. Another similar method is to use unopened fabric softener sachets at the back of your cupboards or drawers.
Fragrant Indoor Plants
There are a number of plants that will not only add a great fragrance to a room but also look fantastic. Jasmine, Gardenia, Lavender, Sweet Bay, Geraniums and even Eucalypts can all be grown indoors, in the right conditions, and will bring a marvellous freshness to any room.
Essential Oils
Oil diffusers are very popular right now and the good news is you don’t have to break the bank to get a simple electronic diffuser that will not only smell great but look great too. Use a couple of different scents around the home to create a point of difference. It’s easy to make your own favourite essential oil combinations.
Baking and brewing
If you ever want to make your home smell warm and inviting, try baking something. The fresh smell of baked goods is wonderful, and you also get a yummy treat at the end. If you don’t want to bake but still want a nice smell coming from the kitchen, simmer a mix of fragrant items like cinnamon, citrus peel, bay leaves, dried fruits, herbs, lavender or spices in a pot of water on low heat on the stove, this will create an aroma that will waft around the home.
