A Family Affair starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King premiered on Netflix on June 28 and has already become a very controversial topic of conversation.

The new movie has only been available for a few days and has quickly landed a fairly low rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently, the film is sitting at a 44 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, from a total of 52 reviews. However, the audience score suggests general fans are even more unhappy with the movie, reflecting a 32 per cent rating from over 250 fans.

A Family Affair‘s Hollywood material and its drama feel at times like they’ve come from two completely different films. But the lines are delivered with such heartfelt tenderness that for a moment, you might be moved in spite of yourself,” a Hollywood Reporter critic wrote.

“Sadly, the film plays more like an artless quickie than a fully fleshed-out romance,” a critic from Variety said.

Collider wrote: “The prospect of new Netflix rom-coms beaming with all-star casts always leaves us feeling a little excited, but the attractiveness alone isn’t enough to sustain the passion in our streaming relationship.”

Indie Wire wrote: “With A Family Affair, Efron picks up where 17 Again left off, and it’s a delight to see this former teen heartthrob back in a similar mode. A Family Affair truly is Efron’s film, for better and worse at times. And the feature does slot right in with the recent trend of age gap romances.”

Fans haven’t been shy in sharing their opinion on the movie either, however, each of their reactions has been very different…

One fan shared their opinion on Rotten Tomatoes saying, “This movie was awful I can’t even put it into words.”

However, another loved the movie: “Cool movie! Made me relax my mind, and have a pleasant time,” they wrote.

Another fan went more into detail on their opinion of the movie, beginning by saying that it “started out with an interesting dynamic between Joey King and Zac Efron’s characters.”

“Nicole Kidman is an A-list actor and I think she was miscast in a movie that doesn’t rise to meet her greatness,” they continued.

“That being said, there was no genuine chemistry between Kidman and Efron; I felt nothing watching them together.”

What is A Family Affair about?

As marketed in the trailer, A Family Affair is “a love story for everyone and their mother.” It follows a young woman named Zara Ford (played by King) who learns that her boss, movie star Chris Coles (played by Efron), has been having an affair with her single mother, Brooke (played by Kidman).
