Samuel Johnson took home the 2017 Gold Logie award but his big moment was upstaged by Molly Meldrum.

The Molly star accepted his accolade and dedicated his win to his family.

‘For the last few weeks I’ve been insisting amongst my family I’ll be called your Royal Logieness,” Johnson joked in his speech.

‘I was an outlier of sorts, desperate to find my place in this world. I found my home here in this world. I found my home here in the arts, a place that celebrated difference, a place that encouraged me to be truthful, to work harder, to pursue excellence. I did none of that.’

‘In all seriousness, you have given me such wonderful shelter, I feel indebted – I want to say thank you,’ he added tearfully.

After he accepted the award, Molly Meldrum took to the microphone to speak about his own experience in the industry.

The 74-year-old launched into a bizarre tirade explaining how Johnson ended up playing him in the miniseries before wrapping up his speech.

‘Sam, come here. I know it’s very hard to play an old drama Queen like myself, and you did a great job, right,’ he concluded.

Earlier in the night, Johnson won Best Actor for his work on the show, and dedicated his award to his terminally ill sister, Connie.

‘My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three decade long tussle and rather than rolling over, she’s going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins absurdly,’ he said, tearfully.

‘She’s putting together a row of coins in the shape of a love heart, hopefully the biggest love heart this country has ever seen, made of 5 cent pieces from cancer families all around the country, with the entire proceeds going directly to scientists and researchers, no skimming, no add anybody.

‘It is only $2.90 for 1m of 5 cent coins. It is being laid in 12 days. On behalf of my beautiful sister.

‘Connie, who I dedicate this award to, I would like to urge any family watching affected by cancer or not to join us in our quest to keep our families safe from the terrors of cancer. Loveyoursister.org.’
