An audiotape in which Natalie Wood describes her husband Robert Wagner’s seething jealousy has shed new light on the mystery surrounding her drowning death – and purportedly given him an alleged motive for murder, America’s National Enquirer is outrageously reporting today.
The tapes reveal Wagner would rage with jealousy any time Natalie filmed steamy scenes with male co-stars.
According to the Enquirer, Wagner accused Natalie, 43, of having an affair with her ‘Brainstorm’ co-star, Christopher Walken, as the three sipped cocktails on the yacht Splendour. Later that evening she would infamously end up in the sea under mysterious circumstances, amid allegations that her drowning was preceded by tensions on board.
Now the US publication says audio tapes offer new insight into the couple’s relationship ahead of her tragic drowning death. She says on the tape that Wagner would angrily show up on the set of her film with Walken to make sure nothing out of the ordinary happened.
“[Wagner] came on the set that day, and I know [how] he felt – though he didn’t watch the love scene being filmed – because he told me that that upset him more than, than any scene that he – of watching me doing anything,” Natalie says on the tape, fumbling with words a little.
“Because as an observer, as, uh, as my husband, as my friend, as my – you know, just to watch someone that you love having to go through a scene like that can be much more upsetting.”
The Enquirer spoke to Marti Rulli, who co-authored the book, Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour, who said Wagner was so suspicious he flew from L.A. to the set in North Caroline to spy on Natalie and Walken.
“He thought Natalie was cheating,” Rullie says.
Through his lawyer, Wagner has repeatedly maintained his innocence. He has yet to comment on the Enquirer‘s latest sensational suggestions.
Natalie’s death in November 1981 was ruled an “accidental drowning, but years later the investigation was reopened and the cause was changed to “undetermined.”
