The singer has been promoting her new EP She Is Coming with various posts to her social media account, but the latest message has raised eyebrows.
In the post, fans will recognise elements of picture – the red latex, which matches the glossy red bodysuit Miley wears in her ‘Mother’s Daughter’ video, along with matching red and metal-adorned gloves placed either side of a crotch adorned with bullet-like studding.
Miley posted the graphic image to her profile with the bold statement: “Virginity is a social construct” splashed below.
The statement is also seen in a brief flashing moment towards the beginning of her music video, as Miley writhes as sings the tune.
Whether or not it was purely a promotional post, it has provoked a conversation around virginity, with fans getting fired up in the comments.
“Yes and placing a woman’s value based on virginity is a social construct designed by men to belittle and enslaved women!!!” said one fan in response.
Another agreed: “So true… and the fact that men don’t get the same treatment and judgment when they lose their virginity compared to women… disgusting but no surprising…”
“There’s an emotional/mental aspect to it so this isn’t necessarily true, it’s just not as important as some people make it out to be,” another fan said.
Taking to Instagram in June, the founder of The Happy Hippie Foundation posted her support of women’s rights and the overturning of strict abortion laws in her typical quirky style – via some cake art.
In the post, Miley is seen licking a large cake which reads, “Abortion IS Healthcare”.
Miley joins the growing number of celebrities who are using their platforms to raise awareness around issues that matter to them.
