She only announced a major new criminal justice project at the White House last month, but Kim Kardashian West is not one to rest on her laurels.
The KKW Beauty founder took to social media on Wednesday to announce she has taken on a new case, involving former Ohio death row inmate Kevin Keith who was convicted of triple murder.
WATCH Kim Kardashian speak about criminal justice reform at the White House:
The reality TV star and aspiring criminal justice lawyer posted a screenshot of a prison sanctioned video call between herself and Keith on Twitter and Instagram, along with details of his case.
Keith has been imprisoned since 1994 after he was convicted of killing Marichell Chatman, Marchae Chatman and Linda Chatman, the New York Post reveals.
Keith was initially handed the death penalty, but in 2010 his sentence was commuted to life in prison over concerns regarding trial evidence.
Kardashian West seems to share these concerns, telling her 144 million Instagram followers:
“I heard about Kevin Keith’s case last year, and the more I learn about it, the more I believe the world needs to hear what happened to him!”
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians queen revealed Keith came within days of his execution, before then-Governor Ted Strickland reduced his sentence.
“I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Keith through a video visit and was so impressed with the amazing programmes he created in prison to help others inside better themselves,” she said.
“So much evidence has been uncovered proving Kevin’s innocence. I hope justice is served soon and he is released.”
Last year, the wife of Kanye West met with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office to petition for the pardon and release of 63-year-old great-grandmother Alice Marie Johnson, who had been imprisoned for a low level drug offence since 1997.
Trump commuted Johnson’s life sentence and granted clemency one week later, the sixth time he has done so since taking office, Harper’s Bazaar notes.
Attorney and non-profit founder Van Jones told Vogue that Kardashian’s appeal for Johnson’s release was “the most effective, emotionally intelligent intervention I’ve ever seen in American politics”, Yahoo News reports.
In April Kim announced she had registered with the California State Bar’s apprenticeship programme, following in the footsteps of her famous father and OJ Simpson’s lawyer Robert Kardashian.
One month later, news emerged that the mother of North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm West had quietly funded a campaign to free 17 inmates serving life sentences.
