EXCLUSIVE: Jules Sebastian’s advice to working mums ‘take it one day at a time’

We sat down with the celebrity stylist to talk all things fashion, Queen and motherhood.

Jules Sebastian is a celebrity stylist, presenter and mum who has provided her fashion expertise to some of Australia’s leading talent.

Now, the wife of Guy Sebastian is turning her attention to the everyday Australian by going across the country to revamp your wardrobe, taking inspiration from the boundary-pushing iconic ban; Queen.

To celebrate the release of Bohemian Rhapsody on Blu-ray, the uber-talented Jules has partnered with St Vincent De Paul to encourage Australians to add some of Queen’s vintage style to your wardrobe.

New Idea sat down with Jules to discuss essential fashion tips, Freddie Mercury and the importance of putting family first.

New Idea: What is it about Queen’s style that has made it so iconic?

They took dressing seriously. Freddie in particular had a passion for theatrics and considered his costumes as much as the music. Mostly, they had fun with it. Over the top outfits and hair (and facial hair), put them at the forefront of the industry.

New Idea: What is it about Queen’s style – and the task of recreating it through vintage clothing – that inspires and excites you most as a stylist?

I love that it opens up a really creative side of styling. Stepping back in time and recreating looks that we have access to in a vintage store is so much fun! You can look at dressing through a totally different lens and fuse pieces into your current wardrobe to throw back to that era.

New Idea: In your opinion what was Freddie Mercury’s most iconic look and why?

I would have to say it is the Live Aid performance outfit. I feel like it was one of his most simple looks, but etched in our memories forever. Tight blue jeans, sneakers, a white tank, a leather studded belt and that armband! Let’s not forget the legendary mustache! Another iconic look that only Freddie could pull off was the silver sequined catsuit. I mean, I don’t know a single other person who could pull that off and still be the coolest person in the planet!

New Idea: Bohemian Rhapsody X Vinnies is all about encouraging consumers to ‘add personality into their fashion’. What is your top advice to consumers when it comes to allowing their personality to show through their clothing?

Don’t be scared to try something new. Think outside the square you normally live in when it comes to dressing. You never know what you might find Vinnie’s that might become your new favourite thing to wear. Try things on too. Most of the time things look so different on the hanger, they come to life when you put it on your body!

New Idea: What is the clothing item that every woman/man should have in their wardrobe and why?

A great fitting black blazer. It’s surprising how many situations a blazer come in handy to wear. It can be corporate, dressed down with jeans or worn with skirts or shorts. It’s tran-seasonal and given the quality, it can last season after season.

New Idea: You are a working mum, stylist, presenter and run a successful YouTube channel – you wear many hats! How do you juggle work life with parenthood?

One day at a time! My family always comes first, that is a non-negotiable. Whatever fits in around that is a bonus. I have great passion to help others so that is always top of mind when it comes to the project I work on.

New Idea: What is the one piece of advice you’d give to other working mums?

You can’t have it all at once, so take the pressure off yourself to be excellent at everything at the same time. Things come in seasons, recognize the season you are in and do that well. You’ll never miss out on what is meant for you.

New Idea: Both you and your husband Guy are busy people, how do you two strike that balance between work life and family?

We keep our priorities in check. My priority will forever be my family, they come first. To me, they are more important than anything. Guy and I have date nights, family days and whenever we are not working we are with each other.

New Idea: What’s been the most rewarding thing about motherhood?

Watching my boys grow into a kind hearted, caring kids. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing them treat others and each other with kindness.
