A huge element of the Married At First Sight experiment is the commitment ceremony, which takes place each week.
During the ceremony, MAFS couples decide whether they want to stay or leave. Of course, if one contestant wants to leave but their partner wants to stay, the couple must stay for, at least, one more week.

Therefore, the only way a couple can leave Married At First Sight is if they both choose to do so during the commitment ceremony. Read on to see who has left MAFS 2023 so far…
Jesse and Claire
Jesse and Claire got off to an extremely rocky start in the MAFS experiment. Initially, Jesse felt “icked” out by Claire’s love of crystals and astrology. And he shushed her at the airport while they were on route to their honeymoon.
Then a few weeks into the experiment, Claire confessed that she had cheated on Jesse and kissed another Married At First Sight groom: Adam. Jesse desperately wanted to leave after this revelation but Claire wanted to stay to earn back Jesse’s trust.
And this is when the couple blossomed. They went on dates and became extremely flirty, playful and affectionate… Jesse even said he’d be willing to move back in with Claire (he moved out after the cheating incident).
But a comment from Harrison ruined Jesse and Claire’s relationship in an instant. He said that Claire had told Bronte she only stayed to repair her image. Claire denied ever saying this but the damage was done; Jesse did not want to be with Claire anymore. And so, at the commitment ceremony, both Jesse and Claire chose to leave MAFS.
Tayla and Hugo
It’d be the understatement of the century to say that Tayla and Hugo immediately got off on the wrong foot. From day one, the Married At First Sight couple never clicked or gelled.
Things got even worse when, on their honeymoon, Tayla said that Hugo was the “opposite” of what she asked the MAFS experts for. Not to mention when Evelyn revealed a few days later that she overheard Hugo describe Tayla as a c-word.
Despite all their issues, Hugo wrote ‘stay’ at their first commitment ceremony because he wanted to try and mend things with Tayla. But Tayla was furious and said she’d be leaving anyway. Ultimately, Tayla did not leave but she spent little to no time with Hugo during the next week, which all contestants spent at a couple’s retreat.
When the retreat ended, Tayla spontaneously flew home to Tasmania in the early hours of the morning without telling anyone; not even Hugo. Eventually, she texted Claire that she’d gone home and Claire had to break the news to Hugo at the dinner party.
However, Tayla turned up near the end of the dinner party, saying she wanted to give Hugo a second chance. But Hugo stated the obvious: their relationship just didn’t work and needed to end. And so, Tayla and Hugo announced to the group that they didn’t need to attend the next commitment ceremony and would be leaving the MAFS experiment immediately.
Sandy and Dan
In a shocking twist, Sandy and Dan, who initially seemed like a perfect match, both opted to leave Married At First Sight.
The couple’s relationship fell apart after the infamous “butt dial” exposed Dan for making disrespectful comments about Sandy behind her back. He said he was “too good” for Sandy and also showed some of this year’s MAFS grooms pictures of his ex, bragging about how hot she was.
Dan did end up apologising to Sandy and said he wanted to work on their relationship during their last dinner party together, but something must’ve changed his mind because at the commitment ceremony, Dan revealed he wanted to leave the experiment.
Sandy also chose to leave Married At First Sight, saying that while she had lingering feelings for Dan, she needed to put herself first.
Adam and Janelle
After an explosive revelation – Adam cheated on Janelle with another MAFS contestant, Claire – Adam and Janelle left Married At First Sight.
During the third commitment ceremony, Adam continued to not take accountability for kissing Claire, saying that it was a “drunken” mistake and that it only happened because he and Janelle were in a bad place.
Janelle completely disagreed and said that if they were in a bad place she didn’t know it; especially because just hours after Adam kissed Claire, he went home and had sex with Janelle.
Ultimately, both Janelle and Adam chose to leave; Adam immediately stormed off without saying goodbye to anyone whereas Janelle sought comfort and a few hugs from the other MAFS girls before leaving the experiment for good.
Josh and Melissa
In a Married At First Sight first, expert John Aiken intervened after Josh wrote ‘leave’ and Melissa wrote ‘stay’. John told Josh that his relationship with Melissa had clearly “broken” him and therefore he could leave if he wanted to; even though Melissa wanted to stay.
Josh ultimately decided that he wanted to go home and so, both Josh and Melissa left MAFS. New Idea spoke to John about getting involved and he has absolutely no regrets about sending the couple home.
“I was watching Josh and Melissa implode, and they were at a point where they were on life support, their relationship, and it was not something that could go into the future. And so, seeing that unfold in front of me, I decided to call it,” John told us.
Caitlin and Shannon
Caitlin had an extremely rough Married At First Sight experience thanks to her partner Shannon. He told her early on in the experiment that he was still in love with his ex.
To add insult to injury, Shannon then told Caitlin that he didn’t find her attractive. Unsurprisingly, Caitlin wanted to leave MAFS. But Shannon wanted to stay.
However, John Aiken got involved again and left the decision completely up to Caitlin. She asked to leave and so, Caitlin and Shannon were sent home.
