House Rules’ Mikaela and Eliza get on with fellow contestants Tim and Mat like a house on fire. They’re often seen joking around on set and some have questioned whether there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye –but the foursome confirm they’re just good friends!

“I think we’re probably closest with the boys. Only because every other team are couples, so they do couple things,” Mikaela, 24, reveals to New Idea.
“All the couples would be having dinner early and going to bed. The boys would be like, ‘Oh, what are you guys up to?’ And we’d be like, ‘Nothing’, so we’d go out to dinner and hang out and they’re really funny,” she continues.
“Throughout this whole journey so far, the boys and us have really clicked,” Eliza, 21, adds. “They have taught us things, like the trade laws that we have no ideas about. They’ve showed me the difference between certain tools, like when I can use that one and when I can’t.”
“We’d go shopping at the hardware store together and with the very first reno that we did, they grabbed a shopping trolley and they stocked up all of our stuff for our paint supplies because we had no idea what we needed to paint. So they just grabbed a second shopping trolley and grabbed double of everything that they were getting. They helped us out so much.”
So how do the girls repay the boys for all their help?
“I guess we help them with just cracking jokes and just making their lives so much fun on site,” Eliza laughs. “If you ask them, I was like their annoying little sister, but I feel like I always made them laugh, well, we always still make them laugh. ”Mikaela and Eliza both have long-term partners. “I am in a long-term relationship with my boyfriend [Kristopher],” Mikaela shares.
“My relationship’s really weird and so is Eliza’s, I suppose, but I met my boyfriend on the last day of me being in Florida, when I was competing, and he’s from Florida.”
“We just clicked straight away and were in a relationship within a couple of months. So we’ve been doing long distance, especially while I’ve been filming the show, but I’ve been shooting across to America in between our shoots. Making long-distance work has been tough throughout the show, but it’s definitely worth it.”
Back home, Tim, 32, is married to Kate and they share 1-year-old daughter Isabella. Mat, 27, is dating partner Maddy who he’s been with
for five years.
Tim says Kate is very supportive of his appearance on the show. “She saw that it was a good opportunity and something unique. I didn’t expect to get on and then when it started eventuating, I got a bit nervous.”
Mat hopes that the pair can win so he can help out Tim and his family.
“Isabella deserves to live in a nice house and a good environment. We’ve always grown up with a strong emphasis on family and looking out for each other.”
