The show that made host Gretel Killeen a household name – and launched the short but brilliant career of Sara-Marie Fedele – was a pop culture touchstone at the beginning of the millennium, and now excitement is building to fever pitch about its return.

Former host Gretel told Kyle and Jackie O that she thinks the time is right to revisit the format.

‘I think the essence of Big Brother is brilliant because when we first started that show it was about just watching humans interact without interference, just seeing what humans do,’ she said.

‘It wasn’t “Who’s going to win?” It was: Let’s just see what relationships form and how people pass their time and converse.

“I think watching ourselves is something we could actually learn from now. I think this is a time of analysis and introspection and redefining our values, so I think it would be a hoot.’

The news of a return was first mooted on industry website TV Blackbox, which says the format was shopped by producers to the free-to-air networks. None has yet publicly confirmed it will host.

The format dominated the ratings and the water cooler for 11 seasons, and first went to air in Australia in 2001 on Network Ten, before returning for a short run on the Nine network.

The show was last in the headlines in Australia after six youths were arrested over a fire that has destroyed a building famous for being the original Gold Coast set of reality television series Big Brother.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reported that the fire was so fierce, five police vehicles and six firefighter crews were on the scene as the fire tore through the property.
