Flying freestylers Cate, 24, and Bronte, 22, Campbell have combined to give Australia its second gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games today.
The sisters linked with Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie for a stunning win in the women’s 4×100 metres freestyle relay final, a repeat of the team’s opening night victory in London four years earlier.
The Australians were hot favourites for the 2016 final after breaking the Olympic qualifying record in their heat when winning in 3m 32.39s.
But the Americans got out to a decent early lead at the half-way mark before Bronte clawed back the deficit in the vital third leg.
It was then over to older sister Cate to power home over the final 100m and claim the first ever Olympic gold won by Australian sisters in the pool.
The emotional victory put Australia at the top of the Olympic medal table on day one of competition after Mack Horton’s gold in the 400m freestyle and archers Taylor Worth, Ryan Tyack and Alec Potts won a bronze medal.
