New distance star Mack Horton got the rejuvenated Aussie swimming team off to the best possible start at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games today.
The short-sighted 20-year-old, who wears strong prescription goggles when he races, powered from behind to win a thrilling men’s 400 metres freestyle final.
Mack narrowly beat convicted drug cheat and defending Olympic champ China’s Sun Yang, who he had sparred with in the build-up.
“What just happened? That’s insane!” a jubilant Mack told 7Olympics just seconds after the best 3m 41.55s of his life.
Lucky-to-be-alive after rolling his Land Rover just a few weeks ago, Mack now looks to emulate the feats of Aussie distance greats Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins in the 1500 metre freestyle on August 14.
Kieren and Grant dominated the ultimate swimming distance from 1992-2004.
