A controversial proposal to allow pregnant women and children as young as 16 to openly inject heroin at safe stations has been put forward in Sydney.
Nurses at a facility in Kings Cross have raised concerns after turning 25 women away on the basis they were pregnant. The nurses were concerned that their foetuses may be at risk if their withdrawal from drug dependency was unmanaged.
The proposal also raises the issue of whether the injecting stations should also be open to minors with the service currently excluding those aged under 18.
The centre’s submission says continuing to exclude minors meant they will continue to inject somewhere else in less safe circumstances.
The proposal has been met with criticism with Acting Premier Tony Grant saying it is “ridiculous”.
