Mum’s hell: My kiss almost killed my baby

An innocent show of love could have lifelong consequences

Doting mum Kirsty Carrington, 28, just wanted to show her new baby affection – but her kiss nearly killed him.

The mother of three’s world was plunged into a living nightmare after she absentmindely kissed her eight week old baby while a coldsore was present on her lip.

But despite being a very common ailment, many don’t know the deadly potential of coldsores – which are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Kirsty says she knew that when she had a blister she shouldn’t kiss partner her Chris Nixon, 31, a car mechanic – but she was unaware of the scale of the threat to her baby.

‘I used to cuddle and kiss my twins Lily and Kendra when they were born. I don’t think any mum would criticise me for wanting to shower my babies in kisses,’ she says. ‘But kissing my son, Ole-John, now three months, has become the biggest regret of my life. I nearly killed him and I may well have left him with lifelong problems. All from a kiss.’
