The incident occurred after police spotted the 29-year-old allegedly speeding in a stolen car with false number plates at Benowa about 11am on Monday.
Officers deployed stingers successfully stopping the car on Ross Street Bridge where the driver attempted to steal another car at knife point. The second vehicle was reportedly occupied by a father and daughter.
When police intervened, the alleged car thief desperately jumped over the bridge and into the Nerang River – where he was finally captured.
The Maudsland man is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with attempted robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving without a license and two counts of obstructing police.
