Despite cotton pillowcases and luxurious thread counts being the go-to choice for many, the case for silk is a strong one, with the smooth sheen of a silk pillowcase being beneficial to both skin and hair, compared to its cotton counterpart that causes friction, leading to hair breakage and wrinkles.
But the above viral TikTok video that’s doing the rounds and has racked up over 10 million views already, one TikTok user attempts to show just how dirty choosing the wrong pillowcase can be.
The video features a Silvi Silk Pillowcase, which claims to eliminate 99.7% of bacteria with its mulberry silk which is treated with antibacterial silver.
In the video, a young man trying to convince his cynical girlfriend why cotton pillowcases aren’t as healthy as a Silvi Silk pillowcase, cuts a piece of fabric from a cotton pillowcase, alongside a same-sized piece from a Silvi Silk pillowcase, to test what nasty particles and bad bits will grow from it.
Both pieces are placed in separate petri dishes, and we watch as the cotton petri dish harbours all manner of growth over the course of a week.Meanwhile the Silvi Silk petri dish remains clear, preventing any sort of growth, leaving the man’s girlfriend and TikTok viewers shocked.
“I have a Silvi pillow and honestly it’s helped my skin a lot,” one commenter wrote in response to the clip, before joking: “They’re pricy though so it pained me to see you cutting it hahah.”
Increasingly TikTok has become a handy forum for people to share their ingenious home hacks, including the professional cleaner who shared the one product she used to clean everything in her house from ovens to shower screens.
Another TikTok user also previously sent people into a frenzy with her clever trick to dry clothes fast when it’s been raining.
