The $3 secret beauty buy that makeup artists swear by

Get ready to be surprised.

Professional makeup artists are full of tips, tricks and secrets. Some are legitimately weird (toothpaste on pimples anyone?) while others are just too expensive for most of us to consider. This one, however, makes perfect sense and is a true bargain to boot.

Looking good can be a time-consuming and expensive business but if you gather a little inside knowledge you can save valuable minutes and your hard-earned cash. Here’s an industry tip that you absolutely need to be across – petroleum jelly. Yep, plain old Vaseline.

Pro makeup artists not only always have it in their kit they use it in a range of ingenious ways. Here’s what they use it for – and what you might like to start doing too.

Brow Taming

Got unruly eyebrows? Stray hairs that won’t lie flat? Take a teeny amount of Vaseline and apply to the brows. Comb through with a brow comb and every single hair will do what it’s told and all day long.

Highlighter

If you’ve applied your blush but it’s not quite doing it for you, add a tiny dab of Vaseline to the highest points of your cheeks. Blend gently. This will give your cheeks a pretty natural glimmering effect when you catch the light. Go easy now! There’s a fine line between sheen and greasy.

Eye Effects

If you’re heading out after work or a day with the kids and don’t have time (or the inclination) to create a smokey eye or dramatic look, pop a tiny layer of Vaseline onto the upper lid and gently swipe across the entire area. There – disco ready! PS: You can do this with a bare eye or add to the eyeshadow you already have on.

Lip Softener

You likely already know this one – who doesn’t? But you may not know that if you add a small amount of Vaseline to the very centre of your lower lip it will appear more full and pouty. And who doesn’t love that.
