I rarely wear makeup and here’s what I’ve learned

Try it and see what happens!

I’m a beauty editor but I have to admit it … I don’t wear a lot of makeup.

I like a little mascara. A touch of cream blush. Sometimes a sheer lip tint. But generally speaking that’s about it. My skin is in great nick. Yes, I tend towards redness (especially if I have a champagne or two) but on the whole it’s pretty clear and dewy.

That said, when I wear zero makeup my features do tend to disappear a little. Eyes? What eyes? Lips? Where? I do feel more attractive if I am wearing a touch of makeup. Or lash extensions. Damn I love those things. But I don’t believe I actually AM more attractive. I truly believe it’s because I feel it – therefore I look it, if that makes any sense at all.

When you feel attractive you have a little bounce in your step, a certain confident tilt to your chin and other people pick up on that. They may not even know why they find you appealing – but they do.

However, you’ve got to genuinely be feeling it. Which is why so many of us opt to wear makeup. We just don’t feel beautiful without it.

But we should. Obviously. And to be honesty, it’s all a matter of what you’re used to. Like I said, I very rarely wear any makeup and I think nothing of heading out into the world bare-faced. Because I do it all the time.

And if you don’t do it, at least occasionally, I would very much encourage you to give it a whirl – especially this month of May, which is officially No Makefree May.

Makefree May is a movement inviting people to go makeup free for the month of May while raise funds that will help empower and educate women through the Human Kind Project. The initiative seeks to support women and also encourage them to remember it’s not makeup that makes us beautiful – but who we are and what we do. And in the meantime, why not follow my lead and strut your life makeup free. The super nice thing about this is that when you do wear makeup people are honest to goodness stunned at how incredible you look.

And frankly, I’d rather that than have them horrified on the days I take it off! Truthfully though, they wouldn’t be – even if I was a regular full-face kind of woman. Why? Because on the whole people aren’t looking as closely as you think.

What they are noticing is your sweet smile, your gorgeous laugh and your kind nature. They likely also notice what a generous friend you, how clever you were in that meeting at work and the fact that you always hold the lift door open – for everyone!

Your lipstick? Sure – maybe. A little. But only for a moment. So take it off. Be brave. Get out there. And discover what people really love you for.
