Kristen Stewart shot to super stardom in the hugely successful Twilight franchise. For those living under a rock, it is the story of star-crossed lovers Bella Swan (a mortal) and Edward Cullen (a vampire). The movies are based on the equally successful book series by Stephenie Meyer.
The story delighted teens and adults equally with its romantic notions of forbidden love, lust and that desire in all of us to belong. After her breakout role, Kristen proved herself to be a talented actress, winning numerous awards including being the first American to receive the coveted Cesar Award, French equivalent to the Oscars for her outstanding performance in the movie Cloud of Sils Maria.
However in spite of her success on screen, there seems to be more focus on who she is dating, and whether or not Kristen Stewart is gay. So, let's have a look at what we know.
Kristen Stewart’s Relationship History
From 2005 - 2009, Kristen Stewart dated actor Michael Angarano.
Kristen met Michael when they were cast together in the indie film Speak. She was just a teenager when they fell in love and they managed to stay together for four years.
It is reported that Kristen broke Michael's heart when she left him for her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson.
Twilight was the breakout film for Kristen and Robert, and with their incredible fame and onscreen chemistry, the two became one of the most talked about couples ever.
For the longest time, Kristen Stewart was known as Robert Pattinson's girlfriend. They were lovingly known by fans as 'RPatz'. But with their fame rising, their relationship was constantly under the intense glare of the paparazzi.
In an interview with the New York Times, Kristen spoke of this pressure: "People wanted me and Rob to be together so badly that our relationship was made into a product. It wasn’t real life anymore. And that was gross to me. It’s not that I want to hide who I am or hide anything I’m doing in my life. It’s that I don’t want to become a part of a story for entertainment value".
It was when photos were published of Kristen kissing Rupert Sanders, the married director of her movie Snow White and The Huntsman, that Robert broke up with her.
Kristen tried to grovel with a mortifyingly embarrassing public apology and it seemed to work. They got back together for a short lived time but alas, their fairy-tale was over by mid 2013.
Kristen Stewart’s Same-sex Relationship History
Pretty soon after, Kristen began dating women, and everyone wanted to know whether she was gay.
Now, while there were rumours of Kristen getting cosy with Dakota Fanning on the set of The Runaways, this is only rumour. It was probably fuelled by the fact the characters they played were in a relationship together.
Kristen Stewart͛s first known lesbian relationship was with her personal assistant Alicia Cargile from 2015 to 2016. It was around this time that Kristen said in an interview that she felt happier with women.
"I'm just really in love with my girlfriend. We've broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like: Finally, I can feel again," she told Elle UK.
During one of the 'off times' in this relationship, Kristen reportedly dated musician Soko for three months. During this relationship, Kristen showed a lot more affection in public with adorable photos of the two of them kissing. Oh, fun fact! – Soko also dated Robert Pattinson.
After finally ending things with Alicia, Kristen moved on with lead singer of the band Pvis, Lynn Gunn. This was a short-rebound style relationship by the looks of it. This appears to have been followed by a short relationship with musician St Vincent (real name Annie Clark).
Since then, Kristen has been with Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell. While we do not know exactly when they hooked up, it is suspected it was soon after her breakup with St Vincent, and somewhere around the 2016 Met Gala Ball where they reportedly met.
Things seemed to heat up quickly after it was reported that the pair moved in together after just five months of dating. Kristen and Stella are often seen out and about together, whether at fashion shows, out to dinner or hiking. They are definitely a couple very much in love.
On her sexuality, in a cover story interview for Harper's Bazaar UK September 2017 issue, Kristen Stewart likened her sexuality to food.
"Some people know that they like grilled cheese and they'll eat it every day for the rest of their lives. I want to try everything," she said.
In an interview with Elle UK, Kristen Stewart has also said "When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialised, so I didn't like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, 'That's mine. You're making my relationship something that it's not.' I didn't like that. But then it changed when I started dating a girl",
She noted: "I was like, actually, to hide this provides the implication that I'm not down with it or I'm ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I'm so much happier."
So, is Kristen Stewart gay?
Well, she has shown to like both men and women. Ever since breaking up with Robert, Kristen has been seen around town with girls mostly, and this explains her stronger sexual preference at present.
Call it what you will but Kristen herself has been quoted as saying:"'The whole issue of sexuality is so grey. I'm just trying to acknowledge that fluidity, that greyness, which has always existed. But maybe only now are we allowed to start talking about it".
There, I think that answers your question.
