According to founder of The Beach Life and fitness expert Richard Kerrigan, quick fix diets can lead us restrict or avoid certain foods and eventually make us binge and overeat once we come off them.

When Richard refers to quick fix he means ‘diets’ that promise drastic weight loss in a short period of time often promoting very low calorie meal plans, that aren’t enjoyable and make it difficult for you to have a social life and force you to cut back on all the good things in life.

“In their defence this does get results and you can expect to lose a lot of weight whilst following them but is this healthy?” says Richard.

For Richard the problem with quick fix diets is that they are just not sustainable long term, and can often leave you feeling flat and demotivated when you start increasing your food intake again.

“Yo-yo dieting can not only have an effect on your weight with it slowly increasing a little bit over time but it can also affect your mindset and motivation levels each time you start,” adds Richard.

Richard advises that we ditch the quick fix diets and play the long game instead. “Depending on what your goal is, will depend on how much food you should be eating. If you’re looking to lose weight you should create a calorie deficit,” says Richard.

“If you’re looking to maintain weight eat a controlled amount to suit your body type and finally if you’re looking to put on weight then increase your calories. It’s important to note that  adjusting your exercise at the same time to suit your goal is also crucial along with focusing on a nutrient dense foods,” he adds.

Richards advises that once you get to a place you are happy with and you’re eating sensibly and exercising regularly you can ditch the quick fix diets for good enjoy your life without feeling unhappy about your body weight.
