Wentworth star: How I cope with playing someone ugly

Katrina Milosevic plays your favourite uncomely inmate.

Boomer is Wentworth prison’s inmate long on loyalty, laconic wit, sheer physical strength and ferocious temper and short on basic grooming techniques, social skills, conventional education and book smarts.

Milosevic tells news.com.au, ‘Apparently I almost deafened the woman reading with me at the audition. I was going off like a frog in a sock.’

With the iconic Aussie show in its sixth season, airing on Foxtel, the series sold internationally and free-to-air audiences are now able to watch the award-winning reboot of the cult classic TV series Prisoner.

Six years of ‘playing ugly’ is as exhausting as it is rewarding, Milosevic tells.

‘When I found the role of Boomer I thought ‘what an opportunity. It’s stripped back, and all you have is the acting’,’ she says.

‘I just didn’t imagine I’d look like that for seven years.’

The actress adds to news.com.au, ‘I’ll be really honest. Some days, I struggle still.

‘Some days on set we go to lunch and I’ve got no teeth [as Boomer] and I’m covering my mouth because I’m still conscious of it.

‘I’ll cover my mouth when I laugh. If new people are on set I try to hide — I feel so self-conscious.’

Despite this, Boomer has become one of the prison’s most favourable characters.

‘My theory is she’s the kind of person that makes you feel better about yourself. In that you could so easily go there if you had that in you,’ Milosevic says.

‘People embrace her — physically as well — so many fans want to hug her, touch her when they meet you. She can see the good in people.’
