Divergent star Shailene Woodley has been arrested while demonstrating in North Dakota.
The actress was peacefully protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which will affect sacred Standing Rock Sioux land and burial grounds as it would potentially carry 470,000 barrels of crude oil across the grounds per day. Critics say the pipeline could also pollute the Missouri River if it were to rupture, which would damage a drinking water source in the region.
She was among around 100 protestors, who were on the construction site before the cops moved in. According to police, they issued multiple warnings for them to leave but 27 were eventually arrested.
Remaining calm, Woodley explained the situation in a video posted on Facebook.
‘I don’t know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacked and said that I was not allowed to continue,’ she said.
‘So everybody knows… we were going to our vehicle which they had all surrounded and waiting for me with giant guns and a giant truck behind them just so they could arrest me,’ she continued, suggesting she was only taken in to custody due to her fame.’
The star had been filming the entire experience for a Facebook Live, so she managed to capture the arrest. It’s WAY WAY WAY at the end, so skip to about 1 hour 55 minutes in to see it happen. The star had support from fellow actor Mark Ruffalo, and author John Green, who tweeted out their support for her protest and arrest.
