Phillip Hughes’ dad rejected evidence presented coronial inquest into the players 2014 death on Thursday.
Greg Hughes was reportedly heard saying ‘lying’ under his breath as Cricket Australia’s sports medicine manager, Alex Kountouris, was questioned, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The Hughes family expressed their concerns that Phillip was targeted with sledging and short balls before the fatal game. Kountouris, however, denies any knowledge of this.
State coroner Michael Barnes is examining the circumstances around Phillip’s death, and could possibly make recommendations regarding public health and safety, the ABC reports.
Counsel assisting the inquiry, Kristina Stern SC advised the coroner not to take the sledging concerns into consideration.
‘The risks to Phillip were not exacerbated by any such matters,’ Stern said.
‘It is abundantly clear that once the tragic accident had occurred, there was nothing that could have been done to prevent Phillip’s death.’
Phillip died on November 27, 2014 at the age of 25, after a short ball struck his neck.
