In the prologue of his new book, Working Class Man, legendary rocker Jimmy Barnes makes the shocking confession that he once tried to commit suicide.
Revealing that the suicide attempt happened in an Auckland hotel room in 2012, the 61-year-old recalls how he drank the entire contents of the minibar on a night after a performance and then attempted suicide.
Tied around the clothes rail is the dressing gown cord, just where I must have left it,’ Jimmy wrote, according to The Daily Telegraph.
‘The rail, the cord and me with the cord around my neck waiting to die. But I didn’t. It’s not that easy to die, apparently,’ he said.
He admitted that on the night he attempted suicide, he hadn’t slept for eight days and had taken drugs including cocaine and ecstasy, ketamine, sleeping pills, ‘uppers and downers,’ and had been drinking.
‘I didn’t think I thought “I’m gonna go kill myself,” Jimmy said.
‘It was more a curiosity of how the hell do people do that, it can’t be that easy,’ he said.
The star admitted that the attempt was most likely a reflection of years of battling demons, including his childhood and addiction – and thankfully he soon found a therapist to help him.
The Scottish-born star also said telling his wife Jane about the incident, made him turn his life around for good.
The former Cold Chisel star admitted last year that he never thought he’d live past the age of 21.
Speaking to 7.30, he said: ‘[I’ve turned] 60, but I never thought I’d make it to 21.
‘I’ve worked really hard and almost lost everything by going too hard – partying, drinking. There were times when I thought I could lose it all.’
‘Luckily for me I’m still here, I’m still relevant and still making music.’
