Veteran actor Sir Roger Moore has passed away at 89 years old.
The British star, who was best known for playing James Bond in seven different films, died in Switzerland after a “short but brave” battle with cancer.
His family took to social media on May 23 to share the heartbreaking news with fans via his official Twitter account.
“With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore passed away today. We are all devastated,” the statement read.
“The love with which they surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.”
“We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement.”
The family also revealed that they would be holding a private funeral for Sir Roger in Monaco in the coming days, in accordance with his wishes.
Moore begun acting at age 17, landing his first role as an extra on the set of Caesar and Cleopatra.
Over the span of his career he starred in over 40 films and TV shows including The Persuaders and The Saint.
He is survived by his children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian and his wife Kristina Tholstrup.
Many Hollywood heavyweights have paid tribute to the actor, with Michael Caine revealing he was “devastated” by the loss of his beloved friend.
