There’s no denying that Hugh Jackman is a man in love!
And amid New Idea’s exclusive news that the Song Sung Blue actor might have proposed to his girlfriend, Sutton Foster, during a recent Costa Rica holiday, we have now learnt that Hugh’s mother very much approves of his relationship.
Hugh, 57, and Sutton, 50, enjoyed a romantic getaway to Costa Rica over the New Year holiday. They were seen splashing about and cuddling in the surf together. Sources tell New Idea that Hugh proposed during the trip, with one insider saying it was a long time coming.
Now, New Idea can also reveal that Hugh’s mum, Grace McNeil, is delighted that her movie star has found happiness again, following his shock divorce from ex-wife, Deborra-lee Furness, in 2023.
“Grace was never happy about Hugh’s divorce, but it’s hard to argue when you see how happy he is,” shares our exclusive source.
Despite initial reports suggesting it was a bitter split, Deborra-lee and Hugh have since had a reconciliation.
Does Hugh Jackman have a relationship with his mother?
Hugh hasn’t always had the easiest relationship with his mum, Grace. After Grace divorced Hugh’s late dad, Christopher, she returned to her native England.
Hugh was eight at the time and remained in Australia with his dad and brother, while his sisters relocated with Grace.
Hugh has often spoken about the trauma he experienced in the immediate aftermath of his mother’s departure. He only saw her about once a year, when Grace would visit Australia on holiday.
“It was traumatic. I thought she was probably going to come back. And then it sort of dragged on and on,” Hugh once told our sister publication Who.
Despite this, Hugh has stressed that he never once doubted that his mum didn’t love him. Over time, with understanding, forgiveness, and open communication, he and Grace have reconciled and now share a positive, close bond as adults.
Where does Hugh Jackman’s mum live?
Hugh’s mum Grace continues to live in England, reportedly in Norwich. As such, it’s thought that she is yet to meet New York-based Sutton in person.
However, New Idea hears that Sutton has already impressed her future mother-in-law over FaceTime.
“It’s long overdue that Sutton and Grace got to spend some quality time in person. It’s not easy for Grace to travel so she’s been waiting to sit down and have a decent chat over a cuppa tea with her Sutton,” shares our exclusive source.
“Their Facetimes with Hugh constantly interrupting hasn’t given anyone a chance to get to know each other,” adds the source.
“He’s a new man and Grace knows it’s because of Sutton. She’s looking forward to getting to know this wonderful woman who’s swept her son off his feet.”
