If you’ve ever been into Harry Potter, chances are you’ve wondered about what Hogwarts house you would have been sorted into, had you existed in Harry Potter’s magical universe.
Before 2011, Potterheads and casual fans could only speculate what their house would have been, or take fan-generated online tests. However, with the launching of Pottermore (the official digital hub for all things Harry Potter), a canon personality Hogwarts house quiz was made available to fans. The sorting test, partly authored by J.K. Rowling herself, allowed fans to find out their Hogwarts house based on in-universe qualifications.
With Harry Potter’s legacy being as enduring and popular as it is, of course, many celebrities joined in on the Pottermore fever and took the test to find out what their house would be. Let’s see if any of your favourite stars belong to the same house as you!
What Is “Sorting” In The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter
In the in-universe tradition of Hogwarts, the ‘sorting’ ceremony carries a significant weight, because your ‘house’ is a symbol of your best (and worst) attributes.
On their first night at Hogwarts, students queue to wear a magical sorting hat, which assesses their personalities. Based on that, the mysterious sorting hat determines the best house for each student. Every sorting is announced by the hat (which can talk!) and is met with great celebration: after all, the houses are a lot like families. All throughout their schooling years in Hogwarts, students of the same house share dormitories, common rooms, and dining tables. It’s a big deal!
Hogwarts maintains a friendly rivalry among the four houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin) by awarding and subtracting points from each house based on their members’ conduct.
What Are The Characteristics Of Each House?
Gryffindor (house of Harry, Ron, and Hermoine): Courageous, chivalrous, daring, and bold.
Ravenclaw (house of Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang): Intelligent, witty, and wise.
Hufflepuff (house of Cedric Diggory and Newt Scamander): Dedicated, hardworking, patient, kind, humble, and loyal.
Slytherin (house of Voldemort and Draco Malfoy): Cunning, resourceful, and ambitious.
What is a Hufflepuff?
It is important to note that among the Harry Potter fandom, Hufflepuff is the most unpopular house. This is because of the understated characteristics of Hufflepuff students, and because not too many significant characters in the canon come from Hufflepuff. Fans have noted that stronger personalities tend to be sorted into the other three houses, and the members that eventually get sorted into Hufflepuff are usually very laid-back. Thus, it earned a reputation for being the house with the most boring members.
However, with the new “Fantastic Beasts” film franchise being led by a Hufflepuff character (Newt Scamander), and with the flurry of notable celebrities revealing that they’ve been sorted into Hufflepuff, that perception is about to change very soon!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
If you ever got sorted into Hufflepuff, we’re happy to report that you would share the house with cinematic badass Dwayne Johnson! It might come as a surprise given his onscreen persona, but he is known to be warm and friendly in person. He even came up with a nickname for his housemates: Huffpuffs!
Natalie Dormer
Upon being sorted by Pottermore into Hufflepuff, Natalie said: “this was not what I expected”. That’s not what her fans had expected either; the actress is famous for playing tough, strong-willed characters like Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones, and Cressida from The Hunger Games.
Eddie Redmayne
Just like his on-screen character Newt Scamander, the Academy Award-winning actor is a Hufflepuff! He even went on to film a short video for MTV defending House Hufflepuff. In it, he praised Hufflepuff characters for their compassion and kindness, saying that “we will do the right thing not because of the glory, but because of the greater good.”
Rupert Grint
Rupert Grint is a Hufflepuff just like his lookalike Ed Sheeran. This came as a shock to Harry Potter fans, as he plays a Gryffindor so convincingly in the movies, it’s hard to imagine him as a Hufflepuff!

Ezra Miller
Ezra, who has starred in the first “Fantastic Beasts” film, has never actually taken the Pottermore sorting test out of fear that he would be sorted into a house other than Gryffindor. He is a die-hard fan of the house, and has said that he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he was sorted as anything else!
Margot Robbie
Margot has said in interviews that, while taking the Pottermore sorting test, she purposefully chose the answers that would get her sorted into Gryffindor. While that will be considered a bit of cheating, she maintains that she knows she would have been sorted into Gryffindor anyway. Sounds to us like Margot is a little more Slytherin than she’d like to believe.

Lin-Manuel Miranda
Long before the 2015 relaunch of Pottermore (complete with an overhauled sorting test), Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame has been identifying as a Slytherin. He was happy to reaffirm his innate Slytherin-hood with the new version of the test. “Slytherin son, you know why”, the composer tweeted upon finding out the results.

Darren Criss
Even though Glee actor Darren Criss identifies as a wise and witty Ravenclaw, he insists that his Glee character Blaine would actually be a Gryffindor.
Kelly-Marie Tran
The breakout star of the new Star Wars trilogy told Buzzfeed News that she got sorted into Ravenclaw, but apparently, she does not approve of that decision. She stated that she would have loved to be sorted into Gryffindor. Join the club Kelly-Marie! Everyone wants to be a Gryffindor!
Stephen Colbert
Late night show host Stephen Colbert got sorted into Ravenclaw by J.K. Rowling herself! She told Stephen via direct message on Twitter that he’s “definitely a Ravenclaw, with Gryffindor undertones.”
