Speaking to her ex-colleague Charlie Pickering on ABC’s The Weekly, an emotional Carrie, 38, confessed she was so terrified following that trauma, that when she was pregnant with her second child, Evie, she saw a psychologist to help her cope with the fear.
“I saw psychologists when I was pregnant with Evie as I had this real fear of giving birth to Evie because I nearly died after I gave birth to Ollie,” Carrie told Charlie.
Carrie, who is now a mum of three – Oliver, 11, Evie, 4, and baby Adelaide, 6 months – explained she feels it is important to be open about mental health with her children.
She and her partner Chris Walker have always been open with their kids in a bid to remove any stigma surrounding mental health issues.
“I went to see a counsellor and I never kept that quite from the kids, I’d just tell Ollie like I would if I was going to the dentist or the doctor,” Carrie said.
“We don’t take special time to talk about as if it’s a strange thing or a thing to be ashamed of or anything, it’s who we are,” The Project host continued.
Carrie has opened up about her struggles in the past, with the radio host confessing in 2017 about how she received counselling to prepare for Evie’s birth on her Hit Network radio show.
“Giving birth is a full-on thing, it’s beautiful, it’s special, but it’s also traumatic,” she said at the time.
“It’s painful, I would have done anything to have the experience erased from my mind.”
Speaking to Marie Claire in 2016 she went into further detail surrounding the trauma of Ollie’s birth.
“I had a severe haemorrhage 10 days after the birth of my son Oliver,” she said.
“If had I not been able to head straight to a hospital and have an operation and blood transfusions, I would have died.”
