Earlier this year, audiences around Australia got to know loved-up couple Chris and Grant in the lead-up to their palm Springs wedding on Channel Seven’s experimental reality TV show, Bride & Prejudice.
In the midst of wedding planning, Chris worked hard to mend fences with his Jehovah’s Witness mother Yvonne and his straight-laced, conservative father Geoff – who did not approve of the wedding or their son’s sexuality.
But while Yvonne and Geoff ’s unrelenting mindset shocked viewers, the gay couple garnered support from fans around the country and were showered with love.
Now, Chris and Grant – who have been married for nine months – love their newlywed life and are making plans for their first wedding anniversary.
Yet a shocking health secret has dealt them a new blow, as Chris explains to New Idea.
‘My dad is actually very sick,’ Chris, 39, reveals. ‘He has terminal cancer.
‘There was a time limit given to how long he’d live. We don’t know at this stage, but [his prognosis is] definitely finite. There’s an opportunity to mend that bridge in our relationship, but it’s whether or not [my parents] want to do that.’
Yvonne and Geoff did not attend Chris and Grant’s wedding in Palm Springs, California, despite Chris offering them a chance to be there, and it’s now had a lasting effect on their relationship.
As Chris reveals, he hasn’t spoken to his parents in the months that followed the show’s finale.
‘Unfortunately, no news to report there,’ Chris admits. ‘My parents are quite resolute – their views haven’t changed. I did hear through the media that my mum feels the ball is in my court. But she is still not willing to accept Grant.’
