Every parent wants to raise their children in a safe and protected environment so they can be happy and live productive lives.
But in a heartbreaking confession no-one saw coming, Prince William has revealed he fears he won’t be able to provide this for his own children – George, Charlotte and Louis.
In the forward of a new book called The Last Elephants, the Duke of Cambridge discusses how, due to illegal trade, the number of elephants has dropped significantly in the past 35 years.
“At the current pace of illegal poaching, when Charlotte turns 25 the Africa elephant could be gone from the wild,” William writes.
“I’m not prepared to be part of a generation that lets these iconic species disappear and have to explain to our children why we lost this battle when we had the tools to win it.”
This isn’t the first time William, who has worked hard for many years to conserve wildlife, has opened up about the illegal trade of elephants and rhinos and the impact he fears it will have on his family in the future.
Last year, the 36-year-old told delegates: “It is heartbreaking to think that by the time my children George, Charlotte and Louis are in their twenties, elephants, rhinos and tigers might well be extinct in the wild.
“I for one am not willing to look my children in the eye and say that we were the generation that let this happen on our watch.
“It is time to treat the illegal wildlife trade as the serious organised crime that it is. It is carried out by ruthless cross-border criminal networks. It is fuelled by corruption. It damages economic growth and sustainable development.”
