Queen Elizabeth has had one of the longest (and most successful) reigns in British history, but the monarch could be headed for disaster as the realities of Brexit begin to sink in.

The United Kingdom is currently in turmoil amidst the Brexit crisis, and the people feeling the strain the most is England’s heads of state.

As newly elected British Prime Minister Boris Johnson attempts to find a way around the current Brexit deadlock, one resolution has been floated in parliament that involves the Queen – proroguing.

Proroguing is the process whereby the Queen ends a session of Parliament and the time before it is reopened.

Whether this is right for Boris Johnson’s political career is up for debate, but if the Queen was to oblige with Mr Johnosons request it would be the most political move Elizabeth would’ve made in her 67-year-reign, one that has been marked by decidedly unpolitical motivations.

After all, the Queen has understood how important it is for the royal family to not involve themselves too heavily in the political governing of the country, or risk jeopardising the legitimacy of the monarchy and their very role within the commonwealth.

Director of Birmingham City University’s Centre for Brexit Studies, Alex De Ruyter, told the Express.co.uk: “This has the potential to hugely politicise the role of the Queen.

“It’s almost impossible to see the Queen attempting to override our elected Parliament, but ignoring the request of a sitting Prime Minister is problematic for her as well.”
